FLIP Skateboards

Flip Skateboards began in 1991 in England. Now they have moved to California as their main location and have become one of the highest trustworthy skateboard brands and have one of the most impactful skateboard establishments across the world. Today, the Flip skateboard team is Geoff Rowley, Arto Saari, David Gonzalez, Luan Oliveira, Tom Penny, Lance Mountain, Rune Glifberg, Ali Boulala, Bob Burnquist, as well as the Flip Skateboards amateur team. Flip Skateboards produces some of the highest quality skateboards, skate tees, other skate clothing, and accessories for the skateboarding world. Their demographic ranged from the ages of 13 - 38 with both genders from around the world that indulge in urban aesthetics.

For the design approach I wanted to have the name of the company "Flip" created with a type that is an ambigram which would be read the same way flipped upside down. Along with a kind of pop art aesthetic to compose the design. What pop art is defined by is "art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values." From looking at passed designs I had decided that this would be a good approach to take. As it is relevant to the demographic and its general pop aesthetic. As well as it is coming from a sense of a skater image. Also, I had the idea to implement the ambigram because I had figured that when a skater would do any kind of skate trick that involved the board rotating and turning it would be easily read due to the idea of the ambigram. Due to this reasoning I believe that it is visually interesting and poppy. As well as balanced in design and aesthetic including a good sense of negative space to ensure that the design is breathing but not floating in space.
